Many people who hear the word "Ultrasound" may see a pregnant woman growing up in her womb in her doctor's office to see if she should have a pink or blue nursery. However, although fetal imaging is one of the most common uses of ultrasound, this diagnostic tool actually has many applications.

 

Ultrasound imaging has many uses in medicine, from confirming and dating pregnancy to diagnosing certain diseases and guiding doctors to complete accurate medical procedures.

 

Pregnancy.

Ultrasound images have many uses during pregnancy. Early on, they may be used to determine the deadline, revealing the presence of twins or other multiples, and excluding ectopic pregnancy. They are also valuable screening tools that help detect potential problems, including birth defects, placenta problems, and hip position. Many expectant parents expect to use ultrasound to understand the gender of their baby during pregnancy. In late pregnancy, doctors can even use ultrasound to estimate the size of the baby before delivery.

 

Diagnosis.

Doctors use ultrasound imaging to diagnose various conditions that affect body organs and soft tissues, including the heart and blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, eyes, thyroid and testicles. However, ultrasound does have some diagnostic limitations. Sound waves cannot pass through dense bones or body parts that may contain air or gas, such as the intestines.

 

Medical procedures.

Ultrasound imaging can help doctors perform procedures such as biopsy, which requires the physician to remove tissue from a very precise area of the body for testing in the laboratory.

 

Therapeutic applications.

Ultrasound is sometimes used to detect and treat soft tissue injuries.
