Can cats really hear ultrasound?

 

Yes. Utrasound is a sound pressure wave (> 20 kHz) whose frequency is greater than the limits of human hearing, which is why we can't hear them. Many animals, such as bats and dolphins, often use ultrasound to navigate their environment.

 

Cats can hear ultrasonic frequencies from 45 to 65 kHz. This ability may be an evolutionary adaptation that allows them to capture prey that emits high-frequency sounds, such as mice, bats, and other rodents.
